Situated in Dartmoor’s National Park, Devon, England, Bovey Castle is a beautiful 5* hotel and golf resort. The course was designed in 1926 by JF Abercromby, opened in 1930 and has recently been voted England’s best golf resort in 2008 and 2009 at the world travel awards.
In 1880 William Henry Smith (WH Smith, later to become Viscount Hambleden) purchased the land that Bovey Castle occupies today. It was his son Frederick who built the Manor House, which was completed in 1907. Since that time it has been used as a convalescent home during the First World War and as a military hospital when war broke out again in 1939. From 1946 to 1983 it was returned to the Great Western Railway and re-opened as a hotel.
It then changed owners again in 1991 when considerable expansion took place and the golf course became a top priority, shortly becoming one of England's finest courses. The course meanders through the Castle estate, surrounded by idyllic landscape, with challenges to meet any handicap.
The Manor House became Bovey Castle in 2003 and since then has continued to expand with the addition of the 22 lodges, spa and pool and underwent further refurbishment in 2008.As well as the lavish hotel with it’s restaurants, bar, pool, spa and golf course there are many other activities available such as fly fishing, game shooting, archery, horse riding and quad biking to name but a few. This is all based in southern England’s largest and most beautiful national park – Dartmoor. ^ |
