Spend 5 nights in the warmer climate of southern Spain at the recently refurbished San Roque suites and play their 2 excellent Championship courses. Dave Thomas and Tony Jacklin designed the Old course and it opened for play in 1990. It remained pretty much unchanged until Seve Ballesteros made some recent changes to the bunkering.

San Roque Old is heralded as a great test of golf, even for the best players. Measuring 6,494 metres, this par 72 layout has been used on many occasions for professional tournaments and was the home of the European PGA Tour School for many years.

Situated in the foothills of the Sierra Bermeja, the course is undulating rather than outright hilly.

The front nine holes wind their way through mature forests of cork oak, making the fairways feel narrower and adding greater weight to accurate driving. The new bunkers and carefully sited water hazards add to the need for strong, accurate, positive ball striking. Additionally, the wonderful views of the mountains further inland must not distract the golfer. In mild contrast, the back nine is less undulating and does not have the forests of cork oak, but deep ravines and carefully placed hazards that keep the golfer thinking.

Work started on the New Course in 2002 and the idea was to create a new course that is a challenge for scratch and low handicap golfers but that is also possible for higher handicap players to enjoy. To that end each hole has five different tee positions and fairways that are wider than those on The Old Course. Nevertheless, these fairways are designed to reward canny tactics and skilful drive placement. Water hazards guard four of the greens, also defended by more than a hundred strategic bunkers, which lie in wait for wayward or ambitious drivers.

The plentiful growth of mature cork oaks, San Roque's excellent weather, soil drainage and irrigation plus the expertise of our experienced team of green-keepers means that the club's new course has bedded in quickly. It provides a thrilling alternative to the rigours of The Old Course.

The San Roque resort contains 50 self-catering suites, tropical gardens, a large swimming pool, restaurants, bars, a commercial centre with cafe, bank, and is only a 15 minute drive from Gibraltar Airport and 60 minutes from Malaga Airport. .   ^
