Ireland’s Shannon Region has been carved out by nature, and its dramatic Atlantic coastline and unspoilt greenery is the perfect setting for superb golf courses. Stay for 3 nights bed and breakfast at the award winning Doonbeg resort and play 2 great links courses – Doonbeg and Lahinch as well as a fantastic parkland course – Adare Manor, host to the Irish Open 2007 & 2008.
Doonbeg’s links course was designed by two-time British Open Champion, Greg Norman. Set along 1.5 miles of crescent-shaped beach, it was designated as Golf Digests “Best New International Course” in its opening year. Heralded around the world, Doonbeg Golf Course offers spectacular ocean side play amid towering, centuries-old dunes.
This is a true links course with slick greens, tightly mown fairways and wispy rough that looks easier than it plays. Scoring well is very wind dependant but shaping shots and learning how to hit the low drives will always help players who wish to step onto a links course.
Doonbeg has some fantastic holes, views that leave you speechless, the friendliest of welcomes and was recently awarded the Best Golf Resort in Europe award for 2010.
Lahinch Golf Club is frequently referred to as “the St. Andrew’s of Ireland” because of its close proximity and interaction with the local village. The links is situated on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. The combination of bracing air and wind from the sea is one of the enduring attractions for golfers who ply their skills on two magnificent championship courses – the Old Course measuring 6950 yards and the Castle Course, measuring 5556 yards.
The Old Course is frequently ranked as one of the best in the World and is a firm favourite of Phil Mickelson. The course was originally designed by Old Tom Morris before being tweaked by Dr Alister Mackenzie shortly before he traveled to America to design Pebble Beach and Cyprus Point.
The Adare Golf Club is an 18 hole championship golf course which opened in 1995 and is set on the 840 acre estate of Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort. This was the last major golf course designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones, Senior. This majestic design has gained international acclaim as one of his finest creations. From his first perception of Adare Manor as having all the flavour of Augusta National, he has created a true masterpiece and one of the leading parkland courses in Ireland.
Adare Golf Club is an American styled course, with rock walled streams, subtly undulating greens and Jones' signature cloverleaf bunkers. A 14-acre lake dominates the outward nine holes while the River Maigue meanders its way through a densely wooded back nine. Its testing design and manicured greens have already assured Adare Golf Club's position as one of the finest Irish inland courses.
